Ugly Spider Veins: How Do I get Rid of Them

February 3, 2022 • • Spider VeinsVein Treatment

If you see tiny blue or red web-like marks on your body, usually your face or legs, these are most likely spider veins. It is something most people see at some point in their lives. Although these veins are not painful, they are ugly. They also may indicate you have an underlying problem called venous insufficiency. If you have them, you may wonder how to get rid of spider veins? We can help.

What Are Spider Veins?

A spider vein indicates damage in the affected vein. Veins carry deoxygenated blood to the heart, which pumps it to the lungs to get oxygen. Often veins must work against the forces of gravity. To enable this process, there are valves built into the walls of the veins. A spider vein appears when one or more valves fail to close correctly. The valves open when the vein contracts to push the blood forward. They close when the vein relaxes. By closing, the valves keep blood from flowing backward. The gaps in the diseased valves in the vein allow blood to move back and pool around the nearest closed valve. That causes the vein to become engorged. As the blood builds up, the veins can become visible from the skin’s surface. Small veins create a spider-web appearance. These are spider veins. Larger veins can have the same problem. They are varicose veins.

What is Venous Insufficiency?

Venous insufficiency describes a condition where the problem with the vein valves keeps blood from going to the heart for oxygenation. Poor blood flow in the legs can cause them to feel heavy and achy. There are some potential complications from venous insufficiency. You may develop ulcers in the skin, usually near the ankles. It also increases your risk of blood clots or bleeding under the skin. Complications from spider veins are not likely, but many people want to remove them for cosmetic reasons. There are effective treatments available if you have spider veins.

How To Get Rid of Spider Veins?

The most common treatment for spider veins is sclerotherapy. This minimally invasive procedure introduces an irritating solution into the diseased vein. The solution causes the walls of the vein to collapse. With the vein out of action, the body reroutes blood flow. Over time, the spider veins will disappear.

What About Treatment for Varicose Veins?

If you have spider veins in your legs, you may also have more prominent varicose veins. These are essentially the same thing as spider veins, just the valves are in the more prominent veins, usually in the legs. Varicose veins can leave you with achy, heavy legs. If you do have varicose veins, the doctor might treat them at the same time. There are various treatment options available for varicose veins, including sclerotherapy or laser vein treatment (EVLT). Laser vein treatment uses laser light to force larger veins to close and, eventually, disappear. ClosureFast is the gold standard treatment for varicose veins, though. This minimally invasive procedure introduces a catheter into the damaged vein. The vein doctor can seal the problem vein using radiofrequency energy, forcing the body to redirect the blood flow.
